Hello Kim.
1. South Africa, being the most powerful country in Africa, and more powerful than some countries in Europe and America, is going to gain even more power in 2010.
The World Cup 2010 will have an extremely good impact in the South African economy. Five soccer stadiums will be improved. Five new soccer stadiums will be built. In Cape Town alone, 4 new world class hotels will be built (2 of which will be 5-star). All the International Airports will be improved. The Johannesburg Airport is already under constructions. Tourism business will greatly improve not only in 2010, but probably forever. Infact that is when people around the world will realize that South Africa is not what they thought she was. That's when they will be surprised by the beauty of this country. That's when they will doubt if South Africa is really a third world country.
World Cup 2010 will also combat porverty by creating million job opportunities (building hotels, new stadiums, gautrain, and of course employment of more security officers, policemen, etc). All the new infrastructure I have mentioned above are great investments for this country.
2. Government is well aware of the fact that South Africa holds a negetive stigma in terms of crime. I strongly believe that it (government) will employ every measure to cut down the crime rate, otherwise this big forthcoming occasion will not be a great experience for the visitors. Our aim as South Africans is to create an impression that is very opposite from what the international world has got about SA. I really trust that crime rate will drop drastically.

1. I think it's a great opportunity for South Africans to prove that South Africa is way up there with the big boys. And that we can do anything they can. This is the chance we have to really change people's opinions about the rainbow nation. I also think it might be the lifeline we've been waiting for. It's our chance to shine and I mean shine bright.
2. I agree that crime is a big hurdle in South Africa's fight to stay alive and what a great opportunity to show the world that we've stepped up our game. Crime will go down. That's a definite yes. Our government need to create the jobs and skills in police enforcement to really show the world that we are not a third world or third rate country. If we have the manpower, I know we can do it.
Just keeping it real and being positive is what we have to be and what we have to teach.

1. I am extremely happy to see the first world cup on the African continent to be held in South Africa. I feel that it will work towards further integration and give everyone one more chance to show the world what South Africa is capable of achieving.
2. I do not think that the crime rate will go up in South Africa. It levelled off a few years ago and violent crimes are actually dropping. As the levels of wealth and education are rising, crime will, in my opinion, go down. I see no reason why the world cup would change that trend.

1. It makes me even more proud to be a South African when I hear it being held in South Africa.
2. I actually think the crime rate will go down, but who knows. Maybe they'll stop just to watch the soccer. But I hope the crime rate will go down.

I agree with you Kim. How can he say no infrastructre!? Clearly he has not been out of his cosy little city/village.
1) It makes me very very proud to be South African. When we first found out, I will still living in Japan and everyone was so interested in South Africa. Made me feel proud and also got a chance to tell them more about SA.
2) I think the government will try and do everything they can to stabilize the situation.

Um 1st Q its a Political appeasement Joke - not viable economically no infrastructure no support it will be the Joke its intended to be, to keep Africa happy.
2nd The crime rate which is allready stupidly high will go off the scale, & I hope the oversea's profesional tourist criminals which invade SA for the world cup teach the locals a few tricks.
Hijacking, mugging is going to explode & prostitution will increase watch & see.

It will be the best World cup ever!! Crime is relevent and it's mainly what you hear and not experience. There are lots of places in the world that are worse. Look what happened in Germany last week with the skin heads!!
