best time to breed a mare, what size should the follicle be?

Under 3 don't bother - over 3.5 - the closer to 5 the better. If you're asking this I'm figuring you ARE ultrasounding. Most we had success with were over 4.
Solely showing signs of heat does NOT mean it's the best time to breed and if you're AI'ing it'll get mighty expensive guessing and doing it that way. Each shipment of semen is expensive and most stallion owners won't send that many to do every other day until the mare goes out of heat. The mare might be crawling under the stallion and it's another 3 days before she OVULATES...without ovulation breeding does nothing.

You are not going to know the size of the folicle unless you can ultrasound your mare.
You will know it is the best time to breed your mare when she is run in front of the teaser stallion and she stands and puts her hind end to him and squirts pees and makes niose.
She will show she is ready to breed and that is when she should be bred.
Just expose her to the stallion and she will let you know.
