For children, given the two options, I'd recommend the PS2. Graphics and raw power alone, the xbox is better, but the PS2 has MANY more games designed for younger kids (and I'm talking about techno-savy kids as you are) rather than focusing only on sports, gore, war, fighting, etc. They lead the market in strategy, role-playing, adventure, and puzzle games, and you don't have to buy a special remote to use it as a DVD player if you'd like to use it for that as well.
Keep in mind that this is coming from a 26-year-old hardcore xbox fan too, but we're talking about kids here. I own both consoles (AND a 360), and even though I only use the PS2 for a Katamari fix (my darkest secret), I discourage my 5-year-old son from playing the xboxes.
(Added as an after-thought: keep in mind that because the PS2 has been out for several years now (longer than xbox), they have TONS of games floating around (several times more than xbox), and used games are dirt cheap. You could stretch your money a long way by looking up your local used game dealers.)

Personally I've owned both systems and from experience i would would say a Playstation would be the way to go. The Xbox has a little bit bigger controlers and on top of that they don't have as many games to choose from. The PS2 would be my pick though, mainly because they have more of a selection of games so it will be easier finding games sutitable for your children. Bottom line the PS2 has more games and your techno savy kids will probably like that more in the long run.

We have a PS2 and an X-Box and I've definitely noticed that there are more games geared toward children with the PS2. My son is only 8 and loves the PS2 better because the X-Box has a tendency to freeze up on him.
The PS2 is more versatile in that one can use it as a game console, dvd player and cd player. That may or may not be a determining factor for you.
Used PS2 games are pretty cheap but you can sometimes find an inexpensive one at your local Wal-Mart. It just depends on what game it is that you're looking for.
Good luck with which ever one you decide to get!

The PS2 has more kid-friendly games. The XBox is really aimed more at the teen to young adult market. Since the life of a game system seems to only be about 2 to 4 years anyway (when the next big thing comes out and the kids get bored), you would probably be happier having a PS2 for them now.

PS2 - there are more kid-friendly games. I tried looking for games for my X-Box for my 10 year-old nephew and 4 year-old niece. There was pretty much nothing. PS2 games are also cheaper and despite what others say, yes, there are many people who play PS2. The XBOX has glitches like other Microsoft products and the new 360, which you would probably want to get since they'll stop making games for the original, is very costly as compared to PS2.

Haha.. I was going to suggest the Gamecube then i saw the other part, hmmm, well I have all three right now and would definitaly reccomend the PS2. It has many more E/E10 games and is a good system. If you do choose to go with the PS2 I would say get the game Kingdom Hearts or Kingdom Hearts 2, it has Disney characters but is still a good adventure game focusing on other aspects of the game, I'm 13 and I still like to play it.

I resolved this dilemma with a friend's ten year old son last month by taking the parents with the child to a local game retailer where we established which games the child preferred (and were acceptably rated). In his particular case, he preferred some proprietary PS2 games that were not available for XBox (Gran Turismo 4, for example) so they went with the PS2.
The PS2 has more available games, less expensive accessories and typically more games on lower price shelves. For young hands especially, I also find the controller for the PS2 has a better design.
Still, if your children want to play Halo and you want to let them - you are going to need an XBox

unless you already have one you can get a PC. the games on a PC are much better. they are more expensive but the computers can do more. if they dont have a laptop consider one. you said they were techno savvy. a really cool thing they have now are those wide screen TVs that you can hook a computer up to. so that instead of a monitor you have a big screen TV to use. very very cool. i have a 42 inch wide screen LCD TV, and a cable that hooks to the back of my laptop. any game, movie or whatever is on my computer screen is on the big screen. not any extra software is needed either. if i was 8 and 10 and i had that? dude...need i say more. there is also stuff that you can get to play PS2 or xbox games on a computer. BUT the software is pirated and really hard to find, plus it has problems with it. which is normal in stuff like that. i got a disk that lets me play PS2 in the laptop but it freezes the comp 3 of of 5 times. it does work though its just a pain. if all of this sounds too much just go with PS2. you can still see DVD and also play PS1 games on it.

Ask them which one they would like. A 360 would be best because it won't become outdated as quickly but between the xbox(not 360) and the PS2 I would say PS2 for their age and the greater diversity of games for the PS2. Also I remember when I was younger I couldn't use the xbox controller because my hands were too small.

To be quite honest, both systems themselves lend Pros and Cons.
1. Every system will have games that will not be suitable for certain ages of children. Although the ESRB has their own guidelines, it is essentialy up to the parents what is right and wrong to play.
2. Both of the systems you mentioned are approaching their EOL (End-of Life.) What this does is limit the amount of quality future games that will be produced, as most developers will generally switch to the newer platforms as they become available.
3. Game specific genres are focused differently for each system. X-Box leans more towards sports, action, and 1st person shooter type of games. That is not to say that the PS2 doesn't provide a decent balance of those types as well, but their focus has generally been Role-Play, Adventure, and Action-Racer. All this means that if your children like a certain type of game you may want to use this as a factor when deciding which to purchase for them.
4. Lastly, use the kids as research. Ask them which games they want to play and then look them up. See what platform it is on (most these days are both,) and see if you develop a pattern leaning toward one system or the other. Often times, the single platform games are made to be the "shining mark" for the year for the system it is released for (See Resident Evil 4, Final Fantasy 7-X2, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2.)
