There's a novel out called Lovely Bones that opens with a narrative from a dead person. It's very, very interesting! A not-sp-well-known author named James Brown published a memoir called Los Angeles Diaries....each chapter is a vignette, with an opportunity to be an opening line to a story. It's beautiful and I highly recommend reading him and this book!

Good luck.

They always say you should with your character in the middle of an action or thought.

Something like : He looked up from his computer where he was busy trying to finish his final paper and straight into a pair of huge brown eyes that seemed to have been staring at him for some minutes now.

Good luck.

Charles Bukowski, "Post Office"

None of them knew the color of the sky.

Stephen Crane, "The Open Boat"

Many a good man has gone under the bridge over a woman -- Henry Chinaski

Charles Bukowski, "Women"

Its a sad state of affairs.

Louis Skoalnick, "Tri Lams"

My favorite opening line for a novel is from "Fools Die" by Mario Puzo. "On the last day of Jordan's life, he betrayed his three best friends".

Something that grabs the reader's attention and makes him wonder what the heck is going on. And it largely depends on the type of book one intends to write...

the longer i looked at that tiny silver ovoid flagellating its cilia across the textured green of the observation mesh the less certain i was whether i was observing a combine harvester or a terrapin.

" Once upon a time"

and " It was a dark and scary/lonely/rainy night" are non starters.

Try anything else!!!

MODIFY: " the crow flew across the sky .... with a broken leg, and a PETA guy decided to provide it with proper medical care, and broke its other leg trying to capture the frightened bird!!!"
