The governments best kept but talked about secret is the NSA.It has always had the right to tap phone calls of the American people.Your teacher was wrong in not explaining this further to you if she should have even mentioned this at all in a classroom setting that was not about civics. The NSA does not sit around listening to everyday people talking about their lives. It is used only in suspected terrorism or other illegal activity.Even if they did just randomly listened in I wouldn't care if they wanted to hear me vent to a friend about my husband or anything else if it meant it could stop another attack like 9/11.People really need to start looking at the 'big picture'.
Again I am sorry your teacher felt it was her duty to say this without giving your class more information and knowledge about the situation.

She didn't explain it the right way then...
Here's what you need to know:
The program applies only to calls or e-mails where someone in the United States is in contact with a person abroad who is believed to have links to al-Qaida. Under presidential order, the requirement for a court warrant in order to conduct a wiretap, in essence, is waived.
Don't take everything you hear at face value. Yes they can do it...but think, your phone company can listen to you as well if they wanted to...your next door neighbor could hack into your lines...I mean, nothing you say over the phone is private per say...
As far as your pc, well dear, just about anyone can do that these days.
As long as you don't murder anyone, aren't part of a big consipiracy, pay your taxes, and don't look up kiddy porn then the gov't will leave you alone

Yes, but don't worry.... if the Government decides to see what we are all taking about here in Yahoo Questions they would leave us alone immediately and run away horrified... so silly are SOME of the questions we find here....( just kidding... I love Yahoo Answers and spend a lot of time asking and answering ) -- Seriously, I feel that although they can do it... the likelihood is that they don't. Can you just imagine tapping 250 million people in the USA and another 250 million in Europe ? That is half a billion "taps" ?! If you have nothing to hide and are clean, they aren't interested in you and will leave you alone.

Yes it is possible. BUT you have to remember that there are many many people in this world and they are basically focusing on people they may be suspicious of. They do not have the man power to check out EVERYONE. Don't worry. It's not really that creepy. Remember, terrorism is a big deal and that is their main concern right now. Not that I like Bush or anything. BUT if you really aren't putting off "vibes" of being a problem, I'm pretty sure that you aren't being looked at or listened to.

Phones are easier to tap than Internet. Internet phone service, because it is IP and packet based, is harder than regular land line telephone service.
They don't and wouldn't bother to monitor most communications, even if the constitution allowed them to, simply because of the vast amount of resources it would require.

Then this will creep you out, too. They can watch you with satellites. The zoom is so good on some of those things that they can read license plates on cars. Oooo.
