Actually the number '2' refers to the density of the lead that's used. For instance number 2 is harder than 4 I believe...
The hardness of the core is often marked on the pencil -- look for a number (such as "2" or "3"). The higher the number the harder the writing core. You might see other markings on pencils. The number 2 pencil is most popular because it is used on major tests like the map test. Also it is called #two because it has the same hardness and frequency as the original #2 pencil.

I thought that the #2 or rather 2.0 lead (which is actually graphite) meant the millimeter of diameter of the graphite within the pencil.
