Its easy! If you have songs already on your computer that he likes, then all you do is connect the USB cables ( one end to the i Pod and the other to the computer ) There should be pictures to each end of the cable. Connect the end that looks like three antennas kind of spread out of each other to the computer. The other end to the Ipod. Got it? Good, then it should say on the Ipod, Do Not Remove in a blinking kind of way. The computer should have screens poping up telling you what to do. Just follow the directions of what its telling you to do for the setup. Now when your done with that, all you have to do is open your music folder on your computer and click on what song you want. Then click on the song BUT DONT LET GO, Click and Drag to the folder that it told you to create if you followed the instuctions for the setup in the beginning of the proccess when you connected the cables. Then just continue on click and draging the songs to the folder. Easy huh? It seems alot because I did step by step, It would have been much easier if I told you in person and showed you. Anyways though, When your done, There should be a word on the bottom of the screen of your computer that says ( Disconnect ) Click on it to complete your process for the song downloading. AND YOUR DONE!
If you dont have songs on your computer, either go and buy some CD'S and put them on your computer or just buy an itunes card from Best Buy and do it from there.
I really hope I help you out some how and, GOOD LUCK!
~ Chris ~

One of the advantages of the iPods is that they come with software (iTunes) that makes buying (legal downloading) and copying music from CD's onto their devices very easy. You can still find sites that let you download free mp3 music, and they even walk you through how to do it, BUT it's illegal and you take the added chance of downloading something you don't want - like a virus or worm. I've bought many iPods for the family (five kids), but won't buy any more. Half of them died within a few months and the warranty was only good for 90 days. Also, music downloaded from iTunes is only playable on an iPod - you pay for music that's only good on their device and you can't share it on other computers. If your son has to have an iPod, ask about extra warranty coverage. If he just wants an mp3 player, try looking into Samsung, Digital River or Creative Labs. They have some great features, are more universally compatible and in some cases cost less.

iPod needs Apple computers to load music.
1. Connection.
The iPod has a unique cable that attaches at the bottom of the iPod and the other end (a USB connection) goes into the Apple computer (any model with USB connections).
2. Adding Songs.
Turn on your Apple computer, open iTunes (I think 5.0 version or higher...not sure of earlier versions of iTunes).
You'll see the iPod icon within the left-side menu bar.
Simply drag any songs from the iTunes Library (at the top of the left-side menu bar) into the iPod icon.
You can upoload songs from your CD's into iTunes and then add to iPod.
Or, you can purchase songs from iTunes (need to set up an account, have credit card handy or buy a gift card from Apple specifically for iTunes) which will be downloaded into iTunes Library and then you can add to iPod.
3. Disconnet.
ALWAYS do this: when done loading songs, close iTunes and THEN click on the iPod icon on your screen, hit the following two keys on your keyboard: Command (the Apple key) and "E" to eject the icon.
Then and only then you can safly unplug the USB cable from your computer.
Charging the battery for the iPod is done by simply plugging in the iPod to your computer and turning your computer ON.
Leave it for a couple of hours and the battery will be charged.
Do the same disconnect as mentioned in #3.
Have fun!

All the software for iTunes comes with the product and allows you to put cd music on the device or purchase songs if you have an internet connection. Instructions come with the Nano. Consider buying him an iTunes gift certificate with his iPod. Most songs are about a dollar.

You copy the songs from your computer to the device
Songs are files so you copy the files to the device, some times a program in the computer can copy the files for you.
All Pod devices receive songs (files) that you bought from the Internet or songs from CD that you bought in a music store that you convert from the CD to MP3 and then copy to the device. You do not pay extra money for the latter.

You could sign up to an iTunes account if you want to buy music online (£7.90 per album or 79p per track in the UK)
(see www.apple.com)
The iPod nano comes with iTunes software on a CD, so you can put any CDs you have on your computer and then download them to the iPod.
iPod Nano is compatible with .mp3 or .aac files and more
- i dunno where i would be without my iPod now.
