Does anyone else think that the execution of serious criminals (in the USA for example) needs to be further exploited to act as a real deterrent?

I'm not suggesting that electrocutions get televised during the breakfast show, but maybe if the public were made aware of execution in a more active manner it would act as a much better deterent than just letting us know John Doe has been executed behind closed doors? After all, it doesn't seem to be acting as too much of a deterent at the moment.

Just a though.

I think that the death sentence which they still use in America is disgusting and should be banned everywhere, forever. What gives any person/government/jury the right to take another person's life away, whatever their crime?

I'm not against long, long prison sentences however.

Good question, and good points! I'm an American who strongly supports the death penalty for violent, sociopathic murderers. Research has shown that putting hard-core murderers to death for their crimes prevents, on average, anywhere between 2 and 8 further murders. It is the ONLY sure way to prevent a murderer from committing any more crimes.
Before any scheduled execution here in the US, the news is generally full of information about the criminal (though it tends to show them in the most favourable light) and the crimes committed. There is invariably a media circus outside the prison on the day of the execution.
I've seen pictures of criminals executed by various means. Depending on the method used, they range from upsetting to looking like the person just fell asleep.
People on the "street level" of the criminal justice system, regardless of their political affiliation, tend to say that the death penalty does act as a strong deterrent to violent crime.

Any execution done behind closed doors with only a few witnesses is cowardess on the part of the legal system. Executions should be held in the courtyard square in front of all who will attend. Once a potential criminal sees in person what will happen to him/her in public they probably will think twice about committing a crime.
Now This is only for criminals who commit murders, rape, child molestation etc. Those who steal cars or break into homes and other minor crimes should be sent to a rock quarry to break rocks from sunup to sundown.

most murders are crimes of passion (eg man killing his wife for adultary/jealousy etc) done in the heat of the moment, execution is not able to deter these crimes.

Execution is a throw back to the dark ages and has no place in modern society

Execusions are needed for hard crimes so the people pay the price

(kidnapping, murder).

I dont think that they need it televised as everyone in the us
(unless they live under a rock or something) knows what the ultimate punishment is.

We should not kill other people. Execution is another form of murder and this time it is the US Government who is committing the crime.
It goes to show how bad a society you live in if you need to kill people.

you can't win with this question my man Davey. there are folks for the death penalty and folks against and never the twain shall meet. If there must be executions though...I say let them be public. Town square hangings...sure, why not.
