The basic product is a commodity, distributed in bulk to the various retailers from the refinery. Each brand adds its own additive packages and may filter or otherwise further alter the product. So, yes, there is a difference between brands, but not a big difference.

You're most likely to notice a difference if you have a high-performance car. I had a BMW for a while that was the most fuel-sensitive car I've ever owned.

Generally speaking the technical specs for a branded and cheapo gasoline are the same. However, branded gas will be more likely to have passed a better quality control system. This means that it is less likely to have been adulterated with water, probably will have been filtered better (important!), and may have more and better additives. Branded gas is also more likely to be consistent - unbranded gas can come from anywhere, one supplier one week, another the next week.

Strangely enough, some cars, especially older ones, will clearly run better on some brands than on others. For instance, I had an old 1958 Mercedes that refused to run well on Texaco, even though our Pontiac would run fine on gas from the same station.

They're all the same. At the wholesale level, it all comes from the same place. There may be minor differences in the specific brand's additive package but the fuel itself and the functionality are identical.

They are often from the same refinery and even storage tank. What may differ might be additives a brand name may add just before they they transport it to the petrol pump forecourt.
