As far as ı can see, there are no specific terms for who can or cannot be Prime Minister except that, by convention, they must be the leader of the party who can command the majority of votes in the House of Commons. Thus he/she must be a Member of Parliament. According to Wikipedia, an MP "must be a citizen of the United Kingdom, of a British overseas territory, of the Republic of Ireland, or of a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, in order to be eligible."

Thus, theoretically, no. Not only do they not have to have been born in the UK, but they don't even need to be a citizen on the UK. Past Prime Ministers have been born in Canada and Belgium.

There are absolutely no provisions against Catholics being Prime Minister - in the last election, Charles Kennedy was Catholic and Michael Howard was Jewish. The person who said otherwise might have been confusing the post of Prime Minister with that of King/Queen...

No but you do have to be a British citizen. We have MPs who were not born in the UK and could become PM if elected party leader.

Whoever said Catholics cannot become Prime Minister is talking complete nonsense.

Oops ! You get it wrong, dude... He or she could be born either in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland and even from the Isle of Man... As long as his or her motherland is somewhere in United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, he or she could be in the Whitehall Palace, Downing Street as Mr or Mrs President.

I'm not pretty sure about the discrimination between Chatolics and Protestants or Anglicans but according to the past history, English Empire created its own church that is in contrast with the one in Rome. Maybe for English religious supremacy, they need to continue the legacy of Protestants.

The person needs to be born in the uk. Please note that the UK does not equate to England.
Even if you are born in the UK you cannot become PM if you are a catholic.
