Because that's when it's most effective. It's like when you are in the ocean and you want to get back to shore. If you start swimming towards shore when the waves are going towards shore, you get there with the least effort. Pushing takes a lot of energy and you want to use that energy when it will do the most good.

Well, 10 CM is still not big enough for baby to come right out.
A contraction actually pushes the baby down a little, so when you push while having a contraction, it's kinda like a little extra help.

When you push with your contractions, you move the baby further down the birth canal. If you push at any other time, you are just wasting your energy. Pushing works best when done WITH the contraction - a much more efficient way to get the baby out.
Pushing also constricts the baby, so you wouldn't want to keep pushing without letting up for instance. The baby will need "breaks" between pushes, just like you will need them. Nature had this all figured out with the frequency of contractions. Just try to relax and trust your body....
you'll do great!

You *can* push at any time, it's just more effective if combined with the uterine contractions.
Your body will push (unless you are drugged) regardless of what you do. It's actually a pretty amazing sensation and totally involuntary. You really can't *not* push during a contraction, once the cervix is open. You can push between them as well, but the resting between contractions is nice, hence the pattern.

You're working with the contraction - the muscles during a contraction squeeze together and by you pushing as well, you're helping to bring the baby out of the Birth Canal, or further down it, until birth occur's.

when your not having a contraction, the opening to your womb is closed firmly shut, so there is no point in pushing at this stage, its only during a contraction, it opens, so each push, stretches it!!
take it from someone with experience, even when your 10cm dilated the babies head still isn't coming out without a great amount of help!!

every time u get a contraction it is ur utuerus tighting up to help push the baby out of the uterus and lead to delivery. so it makes it easier to to push it out thro the birth canel, if u don't have a contraction and u try push the baby out then because the size of the baby it can make u tear

Pushing when you don't have contractions wears you out may have little or no effect. Pushing while your uterus is contracting helps the baby come out better.

A contraction is when your uterus contracts (squeezes) and tries to push the baby out. By you pushing during a contraction, you're helping you uterus expell the baby. If you push while you're not contracting, you could damage your cervix, your uterus, or your baby!
