Books and the printing press. Even modern computers and the Internet are an extension of the book. Computers speed up analysis of data, but chances are you read a book about how to work a computer before you knew how to use one, even if you read the book online. Books make possible the dissemination of knowledge on a massive scale. Radio and TV still have to have scripts - another extension of the book.

the toilet, or to be more precise sanitation. This has saved more lives than any other invention ever. It has made our cities clean and pleasant places to live and generally improved the lives of everyone who has it. Now poor countries in Africa need sanitation - look at the millions who die there because they do not have this basic necessity
