This varies based on the email client you are using. Usually, you have the option of saving or opening the attachment. Right clicking the icon of the attachment usually will give a context menu with these options.

The other issue is that you need an application capable of doing something with the attachment. If the attachment was made with Microsoft Excel, for instance, you will need an application capable of reading such a document.

When in doubt, ask the author what program they used to create the attachment in the first place. If you do not know the author, then you should think twice about opening the attachment in the first place, since you do not know the affect it may have on your system.

Right click on the attachment link and choose save as, then click on save (to download to the computer and then you can open the file by double clicking on it) or open (the attachment will open automatically).
