I had endometriosis (sp?) - and had a hysterectomy (I chose to) -- it caused me to have very heavy periods with bad cramps. This could be the problem - it's very common - and it can be treated without a hysterectomy so don't let me scare you. I was done having babies and all.

I don't know about lightening the flow , but when i was younger i used to bleed very heavy and get aweful cramps. My doctor told me that an increase in activity would releave alot of the cramps. So the first two days of my period and sometimes the day before if I could tell it was coming I'd take brisk, long walks. And geuss what!! Not only did it make the cramps ease it shortened my period from 5-7 days down to 3 ! TRY IT

Depending on how old you are and if you want children, thermal oblation is an option.

This is where a balloon is inserted and hot water is poured in the balloon. (You are asleep while this is done) This burns the lining of your uterus and it will not grow back. This is why you should be finished having your children. The recovery time is about 2 days.

If you are looking for some other options, I have read about a pill that will allow you to only have a period every 3 months. I don't know the health factors but I don't see how that could be healthy.

Other than that, I'm sorry I don't know.

Best of luck to you!

I have the same problem....my dr did what is called a vaginal biopsy....where they took scrapings from the vaginal walls....around the time I am due for my period....they ran some tests & figured out I have high testostarone (probably misspelled).....when I am ovulating...which causes a heavy buildup.....so I am on hormone pills that I take everyday to keep my levels even...it worked....I now have a somewhat lighter flow, hardly any cramps....& I only go for 5-7 days & NOT the 2 wks I was going for......try to go to a GYN & get checked...it could be a number of things...but this might be the case for u too....GOOD LUCK

Well birth control pills don't lighten them for everyone because I take them and mine have always been the same. Try to minimize your activity throughout the day. The more you move, the more your body is worked and the more you bleed. Try to stay off your feet as much as you can and drink things that will soothe you such as tea.

I have heard that what you eat can effect your period, like if you eat allot of junk food, your period could change. I know for a fact that birth control pills do help lesseen periods, and control the timing on them...
