I have seen widescreen, but is there something bigger than 16:9? In the movies it looks as if it is wider than widescreen.

The two most common aspect ratios are 1.85:1 and 2:35:1 (the latter is known as 'scope').

I'm not sure about the theater, but the aspect ratio you're referring to is 1.77:1. Most DVD's are in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio, and some are in an anamorphic widescreen format, which is usually in a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. I think most flicks come out in the theaters in one of these three aspect ratios.
