It varies widely by school system and locality. The main cost for a school system is teacher salary, and if the administration can get away with huge classes, they will. I know someone who regularly has classes of 40, while where I live they range from 18-30, depending on what else is offered that class period. Some classes (choir, band, orchestra) tend to be very large while others (advanced physics, calculus) tend to be much smaller. The class size average that schools report is specious, because they divide the number of students by certified staff, which can often include counselors and the nurse (and possibily the administration)! The librarian is definately included! So class size will always look smaller on any published report than it does when you look into classes.

At the school where I work in South Florida- 30 is about average in 8th grade. I had a Social Studies class with 38 and a Language Arts class with 26.
