They play a big role. They advertise their products and thats how the cricket board earns alot of money. Alot of their money comes through sponsors and a huge amount comes from TV rights too. If those sponsors werent there then funding these matches would be difficult for the cricket boards.

SPoNSORS put their money for organization of cricket tournaments and try to gain publicity of their product through that tournament.
they put money on tickets, stumps, etc.and their product's advertisement is broadcasted in return.
