Depends on what it is. Washing with bleach will help to kill mildew/mold spores. Keeping the stuff dry afterwards (and out of a humid environment) will keep any spores left from being able to grow. Mildew/mold spores are everywhere in the air; but they need a moist environment to grow.

I'm not sure of the question but you can only prevent this from happening by not having a moist enviorment. Mold grows in dark,moist areas that have no air circulation so if you have stuff stored in a basement leave air circulation available, use a de-humidifier and use light. Hope this helps. Just remember black mold is toxic!
