The evaporator has will get moldy from the moisture over time. Nothing to panic about, I heard that there is a spray that you can spray in the vents to mask the smells, Try AutoZone.
Good Luck

This musty smell is common and I've read that it comes from people not correctly drying out the system before shutting off the climate controls in their car. A/C creates moisture in the system so before you turn off your car your supposed to turn off the A/C and run the fan to dry out the system. This takes about 10 minutes. I haven't tried the spray that kills the musty smell but what have you got to loose?

OK under the car on the passinger side you will see a little thing that looks like a hose that goes to your a/c inside the car this lets the water out that comes off your air cooler coil if this is stoped up then the water cant get out and you will get that smell all summer if you do unstop it. You can usr air fresheners but it wont stop your problem

Depends on make and age of car. There are some with a 'Cabin filter' that cleans the incoming air. Replace it if you have one. Also as stated, the evaporator can be sprayed clean. Smoking in a car adds to the smells. The smoke has tobacco oil in it.

Turn the A/C on max or recirculate. There is an air intake inside the car, usually on the passenger side under the dash. Turn the fan on low and spray Lysol into the intake vent!

kittens are notorious for crawling into air conditioning intakes on vehicles, try putting a can of tuna under your car to coax it out
