With reference to Mercedes-Benz "class letters" are equivalent to BMW "series numbers" or Ford's Model names: a way to identify product ranges. For saloons hatchbacks and estates the letters A B C E and S are used with V for MPVs and M for 4x4. Coupés and sports models don't fit into this system in a straightforward way. and the Maybach saloon model is not included in the system.

In the UK there are generally 4 classes relating specifically to cars: Saloon, Hatchback, Estate and Coupe. Of these you may get sub-classes like 'city car', '4x4', 'cabriolet' etc.
In the States they have classes like 'SUV', 'Compact', 'Sub-Compact' and 'Sedan'

a car class separates a type of car. for example, there maybe only a few categories of cars, such as small cars, sedan, SUV, van, and others, but there are lots more. in a sedan type category, there are small sedans, family sedans, compact executives, executives and luxury cars, it separated all grades so it isn't confusing if you want to compare 2 cars. example of a city car is the Peugeot 1007, super mini-Honda jazz, hatchbacks-ford focus, small sedans-Volkswagen jetta, family sedans-Toyota avensis, small MPV-Toyota verso, large MPV-Renault espace, compact SUV-Nissan x-trail, medium SUV-Toyota Prado, large SUV-Toyota land cruiser amazon, pick-up-Toyota hilux, performance hatches-Volkswagen golf GTI, medium performance-Porsche cayman, super car-Ferrari f430, small convertible-Mercedes CLK, big convertible-Jaguar XK, small coupe-toyota celica, big coupe-BMW 6-series, roadster-BMW z4, compact executives-BMW 3-series, executives-Audi a6, luxury-jaguar XJ, and limousines-Mercedes s-class. hope this helps.
