Thanking them is a nice idea and one that is difficult to actually put into words. Using the occasion as an opportunity to actually talk to your parents about what your birth day was like for them is a good opening. What happened? Where were they? Who else was there? What was it like? I know my dad loves re telling the story of how he cycled from visiting his grandmother in hospital on one side of town to visiting Mum in hospital on the other side of town, and in the pouring rain.
If you do give a card then make it yourself or at least write something meaningful inside. Don't just rely on a commercially available one.

It's always a good idea to give a card or present to your mum. If you've got no money even a kind word of appreciation would be well recieved.

I am a mum and it would be one of the nicest things to have happen to me if one of my boys did that for me. Do it! You will not regret it and will make your mum so very, very happy. You are a very considerate person.

I think that's a great idea -- I always give thank you cards for everything... it's such a lost art. People don't realize how much they mean :)
