Authoring a website page is a software programming task, so you need some software to help you. Many ISP's provide support for personal web pages, including free software to build them. And versions of Windows before XP included free copies of Frontpage Express, a simpler version of Microsoft's Frontpage product. Any of these would allow you to get started without a lot of expense.

If you are willing to pay for a website hosting service ($5 per month and up), you can also get free authoring tools from www.angelfire.com and www.yahoo.com and others. You would need to learn how to use their tools and how to store and upload your pages to their servers

Later, if you want to create more complex web pages you will have to buy software and learn web programming languages like HTML and JAVA.

For now, check with your internet provider to see if they provide some personal web page support. These include directions on how to format a page (sometimes multiple connecting pages!). Draw out on paper what you want each page to look like, and how different pages connect. (Multiple pages are connected in the pattern of a business's organization chart, with your Home Page at the top.) Then bring up the authoring tool and follow the directions.

Have Fun! (I did.)

There are three main steps to creating a web site:

1. Get a Domain Name - this page has everything you need to know about domain names - what they are, why you need one, how to choose a good one and how to get one.

2. Choose a Web Host - this page explains what a web host is, how to choose a good one, and what you really need and what you don't so you don't get taken.

3. Creating a Web Site - this page explains how you actually build a website, what you should and should not put on it and helps you figure out which website builder is for you.

Creating a website is just the first step to having a successful website. I will also show you add-ons you can put on your website like newsletters and counters for free or cheap, ways you can make money from your website and how to get traffic to it.
