It is not an offence in itself to be in an offside position. A player is in an offside position if:
he is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent.
A player is not in an offside position if
he is in his own half of the field of play or
he is level with the second last opponent or
he is level with the last two opponents.

the attacking team must have 2 players between him and the opposition goals. I am assuming you mean soccer. You can't be offside in your own half. ie, team A is attacking and Team b is defending, Team A attack and the ball gets passed to the foward who does have 2 players inbetween him and the goal, this is offside

In soccer ( football ) when one player from the attacking team, goes behind the line of the defense of the other team without the ball. When this happens, the attacking team loose the ball. The rule is: when the ball is in the air already and only then, the attacking player can pass the line of the last defender of the other team without the ball ( of course we don't speak about the goalkeeper).

When the ball is kicked toward you must be the closest person to the opposition goal-line - not counting the goalkeeper. So another opposition player must be in line with you or closer to their goal-line.

The important thing is that it is the instant the ball is kicked (or headed, whatever), not when you run on to the ball.
