This would, as someone has already said, require a book to describe fully. Some important points would be:

1.English serves as a neutral common language since it is not the language of any already existing group within India.

2. The Common Law of England and a system of courts that are independent are perhaps the greatest British contributions to India.

3. The elimination of some of the least attractive aspects of indigenous Indian culture and religion such as slavery, suttee and human sacrifice.

4. The creation of a rail and road system that unites the country.

5. The introduction of cricket and the development of polo from the early form of the sport.

hey man the greatest contribution of the britishers was their language.. English. It was common in those days and to some extent even now to segregate the populace into the english speaking elite and the others who didnt.
Apart from that christianity which flourished during their time , i believe, was responsible for drawing a large no. of people oppressed by the caste system prevalent at that time.

They were the colonial power. They dismantled the existing system of government and imposed their own.

If one of your teachers set this question they should be ashamed of themselves - it is unanswerable in any rational or sensible way short of writing a book.
