As soon as you are late for your period, so you van test on the first missed day. There are pregnancy test kits you can buy which say they can detect it earlier than this, but doctor's will generally recommend a test as soon as your period is late.

The very earliest would be 8 days after ovulation, which can be up to 5 days after the sex that led to conception.
The reason for this is that it takes about a week (at least 6 days) for the fertilized egg to reach the uterus to start implanting, and another 2 days for it to start producing enough of the hormone (HCG) that is tested for to be able to measure.
However, independent tests have shown that there are still a lot of false negative test results until a full week after the first day of the missed period. So, if you want the most accurate results, wait.

Some tests say you can find out 5 days before. As soon as fertilization occurs your body produces HcG. Blood tests show up sooner than urine tests. But you have to be careful because just because there is fertilization does not mean there is implantation. You typically want to wait to the day your period is due before you test. You could drive yourself nuts before then.

Most pregnancy tests that you do at home claim to be able detect a reading on the 1st day of a missed period. My test was very accurate... if yours comes up negative, then wait a couple of days and try again and so on.

I have been told it takes 3weeks after sex to know if you are pregnant. so if you start feeling unusually sick, be on the safe side and check it out. it could also just be a false alarm.

You can buy a pregnancy test that you can take 5 days before your period. If you get negative, I'd test again in a week.
