All good bands seem to come from Britain (with the exception of the White Stripes), from Supergrass to Blur. Some great new ones are already succeeding eachother: the Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, The Thrills, The Stills (go for those bands that start with "The", generally theyre pretty good, (except The Backstreet Boys)) Kaiser Cheifs, Graham Coxon (post-Blur punk-rock) Bloc Party, Muse (a favourite), Razorlight (post-Libertines stuff, some people hate it, I adore it), Snow Patrol (a good soft, melancholy sound)...
Theres tons of stuff out there, you just have to look for them. You could use Yahoo! Music, your own radio station, to discover new stuff, or you could totally milk your public library of their music section, both of which I do.
Remember the good "old" stuff too, like Led Zeppelin (theyre british, right??), Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett, Blur, Muse, Supergrass etc etc etc....
And soon enough, youll be a total music geek like me.
Btw Parlaphone seems to have some promising bands.

If you are looking for new british bands, i can't really help you, but thee Headcoats, thee Headcoatees, Holly Golightly & Billy Childish are amazing although they've been around for a while. Check out damagedgoods.uk.com. There are great bands there.

Razorlight. They're absolutely wicked!! They're making their second album soon so they should start getting really big like Kaiser Chiefs.
