Why not do something with books, like memorising lists - say, the states of the USA, then try to memorise the state capitals (OK, if you're from the US, I think they drum it into your head anyway), the order of the planets in the solar system, then their satellites or how to tell which Teletubby has what shaped arial.
A little sad, maybe, but you'll be a wow at pub quizzes if you do different things like that every time you're bored.
