Early on, the primary focus would have been on Professor X training the original team & sending them into battle to fight the forces of evil. The original roster includes Cyclops, Iceman, Beast, Angel, & Marvel Girl. For a long time, these were the principle characters, & even ended up becoming the principle characters to form a new team, X-Factor. One thing that helps keep X-Men fresh, though, is that the focus changes from character to character, though admittedly, there's WAY TOO MUCH focus on Wolverine in Marvel lately. You almost can't pick up a comic without Wolverine in it anymore. So, he's probably one of the principle characters for now, until they realize they are playing him out too much & he's getting stale.

By right, the original Xmen would be prof x, cyclops, jean gray, storm and beast. But Marvel has to commercialize the movie or else it wont sell. And obviously, the coolest, most popular guy that ever came out of the Xmen is Wolverine. So theyve to give him some focus in the movies.
I think erik is becoming obsolete as an enemy. I like the second movie where they brought in Deathstrike. The third was just a freakin waste of my money. They should bring in more antagonists like Mr. Sinister, Apocalypse or Mephisto.

I actually think the film focused lots on phoenix and made of storm and wolverine the heroes, In the comics I don´t think it was only Xavier and Erik the principal ones. it feels like phoenix and cyclops are part of the main characters as welll on the cartoons on my point of view the one who got a share of this was ,Beast as he was the smart one it would have been great to have a bit more of him at the films =) the last movie was great eventhou I think it stretched too many stories at once still it was nice to see more characters in action .

The X-Men comic has run since 1963, and if you look at the numerous story arcs and spin-offs, many of its characters have been "principal characters". I agree that the philosophical and political struggles between Xavier and Magneto may have been central to a large number of the stories and could be seen as the main focus of the series, though.

There really is no principle character in the comics because they tend to move focus from issue to issue. It can either be entirely focused on one of the charcters telling a personalized story or a broader story on all the characters.

in the comics, the focus is more on jean and scott, the 'golden' couple of marvel. wolverine is around, as is storm, but other characters tend to be in the limelight more.
rogue and gambit get their fair share of focus as well, as does magneto. professor x, surprisingly enough, does not. though i think the comics should focus more on him, as it wouldnt be x-men without him

well in the cartoon series of xmen. phoenix moved out of from his host body, no body died including xavier, cyclops, and jean grey. but that wats interesting about it, they twisted the story so that it won't be that predictable.
