When the Exorcist was first released it was around the time that people feared god and the devil, and all that goes with it, so at the time it was deemed as a scary film, and a very suggestible film - in other words, it was supposed to put ideas into the heads of those watching it, but today as we learn about other cultures and religions and stuff we tend to find a way of explaining such phenomenon as what was seen in the film.
But having said that, i saw it when i was about 10 and i had nightmares for about a week afterwards.
But when all is said and done - it is classed as a horror film - meaning its supposed to scare you, and i think at the time it served its purpose.

It's hilarious. I've had scarier times thinking about kittens. Some other totally unscary films include The Blair Witch Project and The Omen which are both boring. If you want a scary film watch The Ring Trilogy, The Eye, Quatermass and the pit, Nosferatu and so on not this rubbish.

It sure was when it first came out, (I think I was ....15?) I thought it was scary and sad when the priest was thrown from the window at the end. Recently I saw an uncut version, where Linda Blair's character comes down the stairs walking on her fingers and toes, it's SO weird and scary-looking and happens so fast but it really left an impression on my mind. Of course, to look at the movie today is not so bad, (but for an over 30 yr old movie, I'd say it was pretty damn well made.) The theme song was excellent and still is.

Yes it is. I know that many scary films have been made in its wake but its genius.
The book is superb too, so was Legion which Blatty wrote and was made into Exorcist 3.

You know what I think that makes it scarier than other movies.....the possibility that this could happen. Some of the movies are so outrageous that you feel secure in being sure its fiction but this satanic movies leave you with an uneasy feeling, you finish up wondering could this actually happen.
