The red is caused by the light {flash} that is reflected off the retinas. {what you see is the red color from the blood vessels nourishing the eye}

The pupil is dilated, so the flash reflects from the retinia. Some cameras have a "red eye reduction" feature. The bulb simply flashes twice -- one to close the pupil; the other to illuminate the picture.
