Some people reformat their computer to clean the entire hard drive and start again. You would lose everything stored on your hard drive ( the memory).
I think its safe to ignore that advice until you are more confident and know what you are doing. You would have to know how to re-install windows, set the bios, update any drivers and re-install all your software.
Don't worry about it. Instead just make sure you update and run all your security software at least once a week, and defragment the hard drive once a month.
You do that by logging off the internet, then go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disc Defragmenter.
Leave your pc alone until it has finished defragmenting, dont try to use it.

When you format your system, you lose all the data on the system - don't do it.
If you are worried about what information you are storing, buy software such as cyberscrub which will wipe all the spare space (icluding deleted files) so that no other program can read what was there before

DO NOT FORMAT YOUR SYSTEM.
THIS WOULD DESTROY THE CONTENTS OF THE HARD DRIVE.
DEPENDING ON THE SOFTWARE PROVIDER(S) - IT MAY BE POSSIBLE TO AUTOMATE ALL THE SECURITY SOFTWARE, SO THAT IT WILL DOWNLOAD UPDATES AS THEY BECOME AVAILABLE. THEN YOU NEED DO NO MORE!
Incidentally I'm not shouting - I'm being easy to read!
YOU HAVE ENCOUNTERED ONE OF THE DOWNFALLS OF THE INTERNET. IT'S ALL OUT THERE, BUT YOU DON'T KNOW IF IT'S TRUE!

formatting means that you wipe or remove EVERYTHING from you hard drive
you must then REINSTALL all of your software. ie. Windows 98 or XP and all programming you want to use. Do this ONLY as a last resort!!!

don't format your system!
format means to completley wipe out the contents of your disk drive - including the operating system rendering it useless (unless you know how to re-install the operating system.)
