Wear chapstick with an SPF to prevent them because the sun can make them pop up. Also if you feel one coming, take an L-Lysine pill (often, as much as the bottle says to take) this also can be taken to prevent them. and try using a product called "abreva" its kind of expensive ($17) but works great. The trick is to use it asap because it speeds up the healing process. If they become a big problem try seeing a doctor, my sister used to get them all the time, since she saw a doctor, she prescribed her a strong medication and now she never gets them.

Ive been using a couple of natural creams/solutions that claim to not only reduce the severity and duration of a cold sore when you have them, but also have an effect on how frequently you will get them. I was doubtful about the latter, but I use these when I do get an outbreak and now I hardly ever get cold sores. However Im not sure which of the 2 reduced the frequency because I used them both at the same time. They are:

ViraSoothe: http://www.essential-nz.com/product-view.php?CA=ViraSoothe&productview=1

H-Balm: http://www.forces-of-nature.net/topics/herpes/treatment.htm

Also, taking lysine supplements can help. Don't pick at a cold sore. Try putting ice on a cold sore as well, it often helps reduce it.

Yes they are caused by Herpes that was most likely caused by chicken pox. I found that silver nitrate is the best. It sure burns but does get rid of them faster than anything I know of. In fact that is what it does. It literally burns it.
