Anyone know how to buy publicly owned land out in the western US, like WAY out in the woods?

I'd like to buy a small parcel, with a water source and build a cabin or campsite.

Ok, first off, if it were me...

I would select the part of the Country that I would like to live in... Desert, Forest, Mountain, Plains...

I would get a topographical map of the area...

I would also download "Google Earth" It gives you a map where you can see rivers, streams and houses in 3D! Roads and all kinds of features, in order to find out what the place will look like.

Now, I would also contact the nearest Government office near the place I would select. First to find out more about the place, its amenities, and populations and regulations about everything there is to know about the area...(some are pretty indept about everything, if they know you want to relocate in thier area!).

I would contact the Better Business Bureau to find a "reputable Real Estate Agent", and after that, I would also find out if they have the "listings online" for your perusal...

Park Services would only let you know "where you cant build", or what the Fire Regulations and all other sort of ecological "no-nos" that you are not allowed to do, around thier lands.

In some Parks, you can "rent the land" but not own them, so you can put up a house, and if they say you gotta go, THEN, you gotta go, no ifs ans or buts, and you DONT get the price of your home back either!! Because they may want to use the land for something else, and you are basically renting off them, and the house is there at "thier convinience" and they can tell you to skedaddle in a few days or weeks notice.

So, I would not want Government land, but private lots of sections with forest on them.

After I have done all that, I would want to know of the lumber yards, (to build the house), and other things like stores, Groceries, and supplies, and if your going to grow vegetables a good greenerie... (gerneral store if they still have them :).

I would want to know about law enforcement and the criteria on what your going to have to know about local codes and regulations, and also cellular service in the area, as you will probably be too far away for landline service, and too remote for cable, so a Dish would be a necessity if you want to keep up with news and programming.

If there is a good running stream, you might think about investing in a good water Generator, to keep some electricity flowing to your home...(yep, they still make those things!).

You would have to find all the information about those things, and if you need a Doctor, or emergency room, find out how long it would take you to get to there.. or if they have helicopter service, for a true emergency...(depends on how far back into them thar hills ya want to go).

Get enough acrage to farm, as you will be growing your own vegatables and crops to survive on, if you dont have a lot of money...(this REALLY takes a good amount for an undertaking like this!)...

Other than that, if anyone else has anything I might have missed, then see what they have that I have forgotten...

Contact a real estate agent/company. Talk to the states Division of Wildlife for details about certain tracts of land.

If an Internet search doesn't yield any concrete results, you could always claim to be a representative of a major oil company and plead your case to the current administration.
