I don't think it's either. I have talked to very decked-out Goths on the bus, and I think they are mostly pretty decent people. I think they have simply reversed the usual "Valley girl" concept of sweet and pink on the outside and dark and mean on the inside. Goths are dark and mean on the outside and (if I'm not giving away their secret) pretty warm and good on the inside. But they like to shock people over darkness and death, because they know most people don't confront the reality of death until it is their own death they face. Also because sex and drugs are no longer very shocking. Teens and young adults often need to go through a stage of being shocking; part of separating themselves from their parents.

No being Gothic pertains to neither of these. I am not a Goth myself because I believe that if you want to be an individual this is not the way.

However, I do understand that Goths are interested in embracing the darker side of human nature and the human condition. Goths acknowledge these factors rather than burying them. Their community is formed around the concept of self-expression and rejection of normality as other perceive it. Some feel, like punks, that the way they dress and the music they listen to is a protest against political and social ideology.

This paints a picture of all Goths as intelligent and sensitive which is obviously not the case. Some people just blindly follow their friends to fit in, other's just like the clothes or music, other are very pretentious and have all kinds of silly notions about being a vampire and writing bad poetry! Like any other community of people Goth's come at the idea from all different angles and all different walks of life.

I am goth and no I do not have a death wish. Goth is a sense of individuality and being yourself. Personally I am happy being this way beauty lies within darkness and I am not peppy but not depressed either. I cannot stand when other's all decide what is normal and look as if they are cloned from a factory line. "To thy own self be true".

you have no idea about a group other than your own, do you?

generally, it's just a way of dress. not all "goths" are miserable or have a deathwish. some people in ANY social group or clique are miserable. it doesn't matter what social group you belong to.

some of the greatest poets have had a preoccupation with death and the darker side of love--Keats, Dickenson..... branch out a little, instead of being an unknowing biased socialite.

I don't understand goths.
They say they want to be different but there are so many goths around that they're actually not.
I see no point in being a goth.
I think they have a death wish.

No, they just have a different worldview. If you look under my 'best answers' column, you'll find some questions I've answered before on gothic subculture and goths, many of the questions are like yours. Best of luck!

Gothic is a style. Plenty of kids that do commit suicide looked normal and that is why no one suspected that they were depressed. I was Goth all through high School, and I was definitely happy.
