By applying pressure to the inured area - say by pressing, squeezing or sucking it, you block the nerve passage temporarily and 'trick' your brain into thinking it doesn't hurt.

My theory, and it's just a theory, is that the warmth/ moistness of a mouth, plus slight suction will actually numb it a little. We're mammals, and look what a cat or dog will do if they're hurt. They lick and nibble at the wound, so it's not just us, might just be a mammalian response.
