My Honda 98 CRV's right rear door lock is jammed and the door will not open. My Honda dealer says he may have to break open the door from the inside costing about $850 for a new inner panel and lock. He already took almost $100 just to check and he broke the plastic lock presumabully trying to pull it with brute force. Am I being ripped off? Could such repairs be made at other repair shops?

Sure, I would accept 850 bucks to fix your problem! but I sure wouldn't pay it!

I have opened several doors such as that by removing the inner panels with no damage whatsoever. Usual charge to open and repair is around $75-$100 plus whatever parts may be needed.

Dealers will overcharge IMO.

allthough i don't know what the interior looks like on said vehicle perhaps you could do it yourself....remove door panel on inside usually a series of srews (phillips head or torx head style) locate were the door lock is binding up and possibly reshape or replace it.....you may want to purchase a book on this vehicle like a Chiltons or Hanes repair manual (offered at auto parts store's by make and model of vehicle)

Yeah, I think you're being ripped off. 850 dollars is too much for a broken lock. It's better to have it checked by a friend. If you don't have a friend that knows how to fix it, ask a friend if he/she knows a friend that you can trust to fix it...

Dealerships are always expensive. See if you can get a mechanic to do it with the parts. You can ask the dealership for what parts you would need to do the job yourself, then get a mechanic to do the labor less expensively.
