The flywheel acts as a storage device, so first needs to be powered up by the motor. This is useful in conditions of varying load, like driving; or varing motor power.

But a generator load should be set to be pretty constant. Most motors function most efficiently at a set speed, so the flywheel would not be much use unless your motor is something like a wind or wave device

It does not work in reverse

If it did we would not replace starters on cars!
