i think it is fair that you learn the predominate language of the country you are in. even as in the use they make different signs in different langages and at times hire people who can speak differenet languages. it makes it easier on you to know what is going on by learning their language

There is no law against not being able to speak english.... I would think it to be in thier own best interest to learn the launguage of the culture in which they wish to immerse themselves within. If I go to France I would certainly like to know a few words of french... If I go to Russia I would like to know some Russian... But in America at least it is not law but most americans only speak 1 launguage "English". If we cannot understand someone then how do we know what to offer them. If you can't say hamburger and fries or at least point to a picture and make some hand gestures then you won't get served at Mickey D's. So who is to say that fairness has anything in relation to being able to communicate with the outside world in such a manner as to convey one's intentions. I say it's fair to let non-english speaking people into the country but I would hope they can at least understand it if not be able to speak at least enough to survive. It is a rough world in which we live.....

I think it is fair, just like I think it is also fair that I learn Japanese if I move to Japan, or French if I move to France.

You need to become part of the culture in your home or host country. It shows respect for your fellow residents. Plus, you won't get ripped off at the markets. And you can answer back when a brat walking behind you says...ooooohh mummy look at that foreigner

i can say that it is only fair that foreign speaking individuals learn english if they are to live in our country, and i also think that other languages should be mandatory in grades as early as the first grade giving americans a better understanding of our neighboring countries..

Yep, yep, yep. It makes perfect sense. Especially when those people go to school. Not learning the language beforehand slows down the whole class. Besides, it's just polite to learn the language of the land.

I think it's fair, and it makes their life easier. But I think that it works both ways. I'm American and I live in Germany...I try to speak a little German when I'm out, even if it kind of sucks. Alot of ppl don't bother, though.

If they want to share in our beautiful USA with all the freedoms, they should learn english so we can communicate with you...and when we go to your countries we will try and learn your language and communicate with you as well...
