The first modern brassiere to receive a patent and gain wide acceptance was a bra invented by a New York socialite named Mary Phelps Jacob in 1910.

It was a man whose wife continued to pass out from her over tight corsets.

So, to give her ample breast the right support without impinging upon her rotund belly...this man created a bra also known as bosom retention accoutrement (b - r - a).

Quite naturally, Victoria found this bra still too confining so she reduced it to lace and kept THAT a secret for years.

Obviously a woman. It was Mary Phelps Jacob. she invented it in 1913.Like all inventions go hers too, was done out of necessasity. The whalebones of her corset poked out visible around the plunging neckline of a sheer evening gown and under the sheer fabric so she took two silk handkerchiefs and some pink ribbon and Voila ladies The BRA made its first appearance.

(I think we should all thank her in our prayers at night. else, we would all be wearing a corset...)

Ill bet that it was a woman. Guys dont mind if your breasts stick out in the open for all to see, unless it's your husband. I think they started as wrapping to bind the breasts against the body so that the ladies center of gravity isnt thrown around.

It was of course the famous french designer Luis Alfonsi on the year 1633. They were not called bra's on their initial introduction to the market, instead their marketing refered to them as boobies holder. It was an outstanding effort to fight gravity.
