There seems to be isolated cases of MPD (multiple personality disorder) or DID (Dissociative Identity disorder, I think).

It was popularized more in the 80's, in conjunction with memory regression techniques (where you hypnotize someone and supposedly access a past life or childhood memories or "alters" -- the alter egos of the main personality). It was fashionable to be split-personality, if such a thing could become fashionable.

Based on your comments, I'm not sure if your friend is scamming you or not. If he's aware of his alter ego, well, usually the "main" personality is not aware of his other personalities. They only come out in therapy, and the selves are hopefully integrated.

Now, with the concept of "possession" (which might or might not overlap DID, but has more religious connotations), the person is aware of another personality (an "alien" one, or outsider) over which he has no control at all, and who makes him do things he doesn't want to do or thinks is wrong -- he usually feels as if he has been hijacked and is forced to watch from the sidelines.

Still, to be honest, unless you provide some extra clinical evidence, based solely on your description, it sounds like he's just making this "other personality" up to excuse his lack of discipline in controlling his darker desires.

Yeah, everyone feels bursts of aggression, everyone gets angry from time to time. Most of us have to learn how to deal with those times and control our behavior, rather than trying to blame it on "someone else" living inside us. People who do not are very prone to hurting or taking advantage of others, because they've convinced themselves they're not responsible for their actions any more.

Again, unless you know he's going through therapy and he's been diagnosed with DID, I'd be skeptical of his claim.

The disorder is called Dissociative Identity Disorder. It is EXTREMLY rare. His alter would have a different name and possibly time period, age, or sex. There could be memory gaps when the alter was in control, but not always. Most likely it is just an expression. If it isnt it needs treatment

There is a such a thing, but you can't be sure without a psychiatrist's diagnosis. But you could try looking on WebMD or somewhere and read about it to see if your friend has the sypmtoms.

There could be a number of serious psychological disorders with your friend including schizophrenia, multiple-personality disorder, and bi-polar disorder. These are just a few, but you should try and get your friend to see a physician, counselor, or psychiatrist.

no there is no such thing its made up, just like all psych "disorders" you cant classify someones behaviour under a certain label and call them "ill". we are all so unique and so is our combination of behaviours... and if anyone wants to report this for abuse go ahead make my day (sarcastically speaking) and censor me.. cz thats what people that cant handle things do, categorise and think they know better... just the type of thing a psych does every day...

absolutely, and is called double personality as well and some people even called it dual personality and many people suffer from multiple personalities as well, if some one suffers from personality disorder they should seek for professional help, a psychologist is the best answer and make sure you explain that a psychologist is just a personal adviser not to cure mentally ill people...
