This is the exact situation that happened to me and later on I had about 30 of them. I was all excited that I had baby snails and it turned out that when I was buying some new plants at a pet store, a couple of these snails were on them and the multiplied...however they were the type that ruin your plants and just make your tank dirty. If they are small and have a dark color...not good. If they have a lighter color...congradulations! Also, the small kind that I am talking about dont really grow to a big size. If this is the case, you can buy a container with special water that get rid of these snails or you can just thorougly clean your tank. Good luck!

Snails make their own shells. Snails produce ammonia like any fish, so if you get too many you will need to do more frequent water changes to keep your fish healthy, so as soon as the baby snails reach a reasonable size, get rid of the extra ones.
Like worms, snails have girl and boy parts, so if you have two snails, you will have babies, frequently. Most snails reproduce by laying eggs, so if you don't want lots of baby snails, look for eggs when you clean your tank. Snails like to lay eggs on the bottom of leaves and other hard-to-see places, so look hard!

All snails grow their shells. The only creature I know that finds their shells is hermit crabs.

They will continue to multiply, eventually you will have hundreds of them, and I can tell you that they will definitely keep your tank clean including inside the filters. They are fun and nice to have in the tank.
