Generally authors dont have money as an intention while writing cause it marrs creativity.I think he was thinking of giving the story more twists and merging historical discrepencies with the fictional plot. The money part comes in later once the book becomes popular with its readers.Maybe Dan Brown was thinking of writing another book at that time. The subject of da Vinci Code is the papal secrecy on Jesus's bloodline. Also, it says that Jesus was a prophet with Mary Magdalene as his Wife..Its a potential controvercial and a powerful subject to write on in this modern age.

Freedom of expression is what allows such stuff to get into print and then sell a million copies.

Why christianity?Maybe coz Dan Brown himself is Catholic and Christianity is a major world religion. All the same it has got a lot of discrepancies and the limited no.of proofs on the data in the Bible , that also adds to the curiosity and chaos raised by THE DA VINCI CODE!
