D is what you want for drive. The other lower gears are for getting down a steep hill or mountain or driving on ice and such.

D basically means you are in fully automatic mode. You would most commonly use the numbered gears to enlist the braking effect of the engine when going down a steep hill. You would not use a lower gear such as this on ice; you want the highest gear possible to reduce wheel-spin. If you put the gear into "2" to start it will still start with 1 but not go higher than 2. This is different from special ice or hill-start buttons that ensue first gear is not employed.
For most people driving an automatic is easy if you can drive a normal car. However, you need to remeber to keep your left foot away from the pedals. Left-foot braking is considered an advanced technique in most circles.

Just put it in D. The lower gears are for towing, etc. and not for general driving.

Yes, "D". "2" or "1" are only used if you want the car not to shift to anything higher than that (when going downhill, say.)
