U only need one of these when you become sexually active or you are getting married. When u go to the doctor, u lay on a table and scoot down to the edge of the table and put your feet up and lay your legs apart so the doctor can take a scope and look up into your uterus through your cervix. They also look at your vagina. They scrape the lining of your uterus and send it off to a lab to have tests run to see if you have any sexually transmitted diseases or cancer or any changes in the cells that are not supposed to be there. Then the doctor takes a couple of fingers and sticks them up inside u and pushes down on your uterus and then to the sides so they can feel your ovaries to see if there are any cysts on them. They they stick their fingers up in your butt to check out your rectum and bladder to see if they are okay. That is what happens in a pap exam or test. If you are sexually active, u should have one every year. You should also have a mammogram done. The first one they will use as a baseline. After that they compare to the first one if it is normal.

A pap smear or exam is a screening test for cervical cancer one by taking some cells from your cervix ( the mouth of your womb). This is done during a pelvic exam. It is simple and very quick. A speculum has to be passed first so the doctor can see what he/she is doing.
Generally, at your age if you have been sexually active for about 3 years then you should get one done. Otherwise you should get one when you are 21. It is designed to identify early changes in the cells of the cervix and help nip cancer in the bud. Cervical cancer is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and it is a sexually transmitted disease. The more sexual partners you have and the earlier in life you start having sex, the greater the risk.

As soon as you turn 18, or when you become sexually active, whichever comes first. Most sexually active women need a pap test every year, some more frequently. You should make an appointment with your gynecologist annually, and don't be afraid to ask questions.

I didn't have one until I was 18. I wasn't sexually active, but I was going off to college and I knew that diseases where everywhere... Even if I wasn't having sex I could have gotten one another way. It is also a good idea to get one if you have irregular periods or really bad cramps, that way you can get on birth control and hopefully regulate your periods or help your cramps. Its always a good idea to get one when you are around that age because you never know, and its always better to be safe then sorry.

The exam for women takes cultures from your cervics to make sure you're healthy. All the commercials you see about HPV are related to this since it effects your cervics and can cause cancer. You should actually begin seeing an OB/Gyn once you've started menstrating.
