Traditionally a dude is a dandy; a man who dresses flashily. But in recent years, the term has taken on a colloquial meaning at variance with that: it now means a male friend, mate, comrade, or associate. It can also be used as an informal form of address when the speaker does not know the name of the person that he or she is speaking to.

Informal An Easterner or city person who vacations on a ranch in the West.
Informal A man who is very fancy or sharp in dress and demeanor.
Slang
A man; a fellow.
dudes Persons of either sex.

Traditionally a dude (pronounced /d(j)uːd/) is a dandy; a man who dresses flashily. But in recent years, the term has taken on a colloquial meaning at variance with that: it now means a male friend, mate, comrade, or associate. It can also be used as an informal form of address when the speaker does not know the name of the person that he or she is speaking to. A dudette or a Dudie is a female friend, comrade, or associate, although increasingly, "dude" is being used as a gender-neutral address. Formerly, the word was associated with Western movies. The new usage entered the mainstream from California surfer slang from at least 1968, referenced in the movie Easy Rider, and today is strongly associated with Generation X.

Definitions of Dude on the Web:

* (Hunting) An inexperienced guest on a ride or a hunt. A somewhat derogatory term.

* This is can be used to refer to any person whether they are known by the speaker or not. Ex. “That dude is stealing my car.” Or “Dude, I’m glad you finally called.”

* This phrase refers to a physical action that is completely unnecessary and at the same time incredibly stupid and lame. Like Legolas' skateboarding down the stairs during the Battle of Helm's Deep in The Two Towers or his scaling of the oliphant in The Return of the King, it's a scene or a sequence in a film that is totally bogus!! (or Legolas!!)

* fellow: an informal form of address for a man; "Say, fellow, what are you doing?"; "Hey buster, what's up?"
* dandy: a man who is much concerned with his dress and appearance
