I think us Americans are described as "ugly Americans" because many (but not all) of us assume that our nation is superior to all others and that our culture should be imposed on others' wherever we go. This is just stupid. To my knowledge, there is no other nation that is so self-righteous. President Bush has no right to turn Iraq into a democracy. Only the Iraqi people have the right to decide this. So many people say they are "proud to be an American", but I don't believe it is a thing deserving of pride anymore. Yes, we have many freedoms that so many other countries don't have, but does that include the right to dictate policies to other nations?

I have met a lot of Americans over the years, and on an individual basis most of them have been really nice people.

But many of us in the rest of the world have a problem with "America", in the collective sense. Because the perception (not without some justification, i might add) has long been that Americans know little about the rest of the world, and care even less. So many of them go abroad assuming everything will be EXACTLY like it is back home.....and when they find it isn't they complain.

It's not so bad in Canada, because it's not all that different here, and many of them have actually heard about us before. But in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia.....well, their story is often different.

And, of course, most of the world is completely disgusted by the current US government, so even decent Americans are tarred by that same oily brush. Sad, really.

(And yes, it was MUCH better when Bill Clinton was President. Americans were seen in a MUCH better light internationally than they are today. So please feel free to reach your own conclusions about that.)

I love Americans; I just hate the Bush administration and the military industrial complex whom they REALLY work for. The way things are going, those waterheads are going to bring about the end of the world. I feel sorry for the average American; I mean, for a supposed first world country, economically and socially things are pretty f--ked up here in Canada, but south of the border it's worse. At least, finally, it seems that the American people are starting to wise up and ask questions about what their government is doing. People are finally starting to see through all the lies and propaganda, bless their hearts, because homespun insanity like 9/11, Homeland Security and the illegal immoral war in Iraq affects ALL of us, not just Americans. But my gawd!! The division between left and right in the States is even worse than it is up here. I mean the nuts on either side are really nutty; it's scary. I notice it on here, even, and I'm not even American! But, boy! Some of my decidedly left leaning statements (like this one, no doubt) sure ruffled a lot of right wing feathers. I mean, real animosity. Not that I care, mind you, I've been politically outspoken for too long to change my ways now. I'm sure if I was in the States Homeland Security would have tossed my a-- into Gitmo years ago. Things haven't gotten to that point in Canada, yet, but it's only a matter of time.
I think the world in general owes America a LOT of thanks for their accomplishments. It's a g-ddamn shame the whole country has to take flack for what their government does.

I lived in America for a year and found the US and (most) Americans are quite different from the way they appear to the rest of the planet. I was in California though, which is very different than middle America.

It is embarrassing and frustrating for those who do not support Bush, who seems to be ruining any previous good-will that the US has worked so hard to earn.

P.S. This is the 4th time you've asked this question today!

Bush and the conservative Republicans who control Senate and Congress have caused serious harm to the US in following ways: aiding corruption in many areas between government and corporations, giving huge tax cuts to rich while taking benefits from poor, increasing national debt by spending monies which US does not have and must borrow, running an illegal war in Iraq at tremendous cost in lives and money, torturing of people captured and held in secret prisons, violating US laws, violating civil rights, and using right wing media to brainwash Americans. The only hope for America is to see the people vote out of power these crooks and liars that have ruined America in the last 6 years.

To Vicious V. It may be that "successful decent Americans" are put off by people who describe themselves as "Viscious" and have no perserverance. Perhaps you had nothing to contribute? Good bye! Have an nice trip home!

right now my view on americans is that they are just a large group of people that for the most part have their heads stuck in the clouds. since i myself have completely given up on meeting any halfway decent succesful "americans" i will be leaving this country very shortly.
