Ask for help from the librarian! Get them to show you how to find a book.
Books are sorted a few ways in the library.
At a school library, there are 2 sections: fiction and non-fiction. Fiction books are arranged alphabetically by the author's last name. There are little kids picture books in one area, older kids books with few or no pictures in another area.
Non-fiction books are arranged by subject matter, and have a number on them.
There are also reference books which are located in the reference section (usually at a public library).
At a public library there is a Childrens Section, with all the kids books, and the rest of the library has adult books.
Get the librarian to give you a tour, they will, and it's free!
Your library most likely has a computer system and all books can be found and searched for with the computer. Get the librarian to show you how to search for a book using the computer.
Every library is a little different as far as layout, but the books themselves are arranged the same. Once you learn how to use one library, using the next one is pretty easy.

To look up a book in a library, you use a card catalog (whether it is an actual card catalog or such a system that has been put on the computer). The librarian can explain how to use whichever system that library uses. They're there to help!
You can look up a kind of book: the category has a particular range of numbers, or you can look up a specific book. You can look up a specific book by its title. You can also find it if you know the author's name. To find a biography, you can just go to the biography section and look based on the first letter of the last name of the person you want a book on. Babe Ruth would be under the "R's," for example.
There is the Dewey Decimal System used by most public libraries, and the Library of Congress System, used by most university libraries. They are pretty much alike. Best bet is to just ask the librarian. If you're a quick study, you'll totally catch on right then. Libraries are wonderful places. You can get a REAL education with them, not just the credentials you get in lieu of good education from, say, public schools.
