Definition of Automated external defibrillator
Automated external defibrillator: A device that automatically analyzes the heart rhythm and, if it detects a problem that may respond to an electrical shock, that permits a shock to be delivered to restore a normal heart rhythm. Abbreviated AED. Thanks to their small size and ease of use, AEDs have been installed in many settings (such as schools and airports) and serve a role in expanding the number of opportunities for life-saving defibrillation.
Since the heart is the only muscle that creates it's own electricity. In the case of abnormal rhythms the AED or defibrillator stops the heart in hopes that the heart will start itself back up into a normal rhythm. If the heart is stopped then hopefuly the shock will "wake it up" and cause it to return to a normal rhythm.
There is a manual version that is used by people with advanced training. The manual defibrillator can be used to correct a wider range of rhythms. It's the ones that you see being used in "hospital" type movies where they shout "CLEAR" and then use a charge of electricity on the patient.

I think you mean "defibrillator".
There is a heart condition known as ventricular fibrillation (referred to on medical shows a "v-fib"), when the heart starts beating so fast that the chambers in the heart don't have time to fill up with blood, which means the heart isn't really moving any blood around the body.
A defibrillator is attached to three points around the chest, and sends an electric shock through the heart, in the hopes of stopping it from beating.
After the shock, the heart can resume beating at a normal pace, but does not always. Sometimes it keeps fibrillating, sometimes it stops (which can present as either tachicardia, which is when the heart slows down so much it can't move enough to move enough blood around the body, or as cardiac arrest, which is when the heart stops altogether).

It's called a defibrillator. An implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) is a device that is implanted in the chest to monitor for and, if necessary, correct abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias). They were developed originally to correct heart rhythms that are too fast, but recent technological advances have increased the pool of possible patients who may benefit from an ICD.
An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable automatic device used to restore normal heart rhythm to patients in cardiac arrest.
An AED is applied outside the body. It automatically analyzes the patient’s heart rhythm and advises the rescuer whether or not a shock is needed to restore a normal heart beat. If the patient’s heart resumes beating normally, the heart has been defibrillated.

Did you mean Defibrillator? If so, Here's your answer:
A defibrillator is a medical device used in the defibrillation of the heart. It consists of a central unit and a set of two electrodes. The central unit provides a source of power and control. The two electrodes are placed directly on or in the patient. The device is designed to deliver an electric shock to the patient, in an effort to stop ventricular fibrillation.

i think you are talking about a defibrillator, it is a device with two electrodes which you place on a victim when you are trying to do CPR, instead of using your hands to manually circulate the oxygenated blood through the body of the victim, you hit a button and it send shock to the victim between breathing for the victim.
similar to the crash cart the hospitals have except this one is portable and now most airports have them hanging out on the walls just in case it is needed.

You mean "defibrillator". It is either an appliance implanted into the heart, or an external, portable machine used by emergency crews that "shocks" the heart back to a normal rythm.
