Yes, you can use both on the same computer. However, you have to reinstall Windows again to do this on the same hard drive. Partition the hard drive into two partitions so you have room for both Windows and Linux. Install Windows first, otherwise it will just install itself over Linux if you install that first.

yes ! keep the current windows xp undisturbed.
but for linux installation you need hard disk space as large af 5 -6 GB according to the packages u need in linux. u can manually partition this 6 GB. but it not advied since u hav windows xp. so if is a safe practice to let linux automatically partition according to its needs. so before everything get into
control panel => admin tools => computer management => disk management.

identify a drive from which u can borrow the 6 GB for linux.
separete the 6GB and put it in new drive. then delet this drive so that it shows 'unknown partition'. now insert the linux dvd/ cd and restart the computer. u'll bbe asked abt the partition with 3 choices. plz choose 'Automatic partition' and proceed

i hav assumed that u r having red hat linux distribution

Two options:
a) Repartition hard drive, install Linux in empty partition, dual boot into EITHER Windows or Linux when you start the machine.

b) Install VMware, create a virtual machine for Linux and install it there. You'll need around 512MB RAM but you can work in BOTH at the same time.

See this is great. You have a nice laptop that one day might die via virus, hardware failure, droppage, etc. So, you want to have a second oeprating system, and you can avoid worrying about virii and hard drive crashing too all in one.

download knoppix linux ver 5 which is about 680mb, which will not take you too long on DSL or CABLE internet connections. Then burn the ISO image you downloaded with NERO or whatever program you have to burn cd images (www.download.com has a few free and shareware ones if your laptop doesnt).

KNOPPIX linux installs the ENTIRE OS of K-linux in under 2 minutes usually. Not boot, but install to memory and boot too. you can access your NTFS and FAT#@ drives, cameras, you name it. Its great, and you can later use a portable drive for extra linux formatting, storage, playing, etc.

(from knoppix site)
KNOPPIX is a bootable CD or DVD with a collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a productive Linux desktop, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it. (over 8 GB on the DVD "Maxi" edition).
