Most voters have to work, are poor and have everything to gain from socialism; higher wages, shorter working hours, longer holidays, more generous welfare, better health care, cheaper education, better law enforcement. This is true everywhere, even in the richest countries in the world. Yet sometimes conservatives win even fair democratic elections. Why?

Two words :God and Country There is this post -Viet Nam feeling in America that the reason the war was lost was because Americans helped defeat other Americans. The Americans that allegedly [and possibly unknowingly] aided and abeted the enemy were called liberals. The fact that a lot of them were northerners and were destined for white collar jobs was not lost on the working men of america. The anger is still very much there and the republican party has done a great job keeping the rift open.
Most of the Republicans in power never worked a hard day in their lives. They never built cars all day. Never swung a hammer all day, never drove a rig all night. Never had to make the decision of whether to pay the rent or the medical insurance.. So here we have the working class heroes of america voting for the college boys they hated in the sixties because they feel that the Repuplican college boys are more moral and will defend America better.

The majority of voters in the free world are not the poor. Infact, the so called "working poor" generally have a low voter turn out.
The so called "right wing" parties win most elections in the successful free world governments because they are more representative of the majority of the people. It is the left wing socialist parties that have destroyed so many over time. Consider the likes of the old socialist soviet union. Is that what you want for a life style?

the working poor, prolitariat, grassroots, whatever you want to call it suffers from a lack of education, and the prospect of being part of something progressive and strong is very alluring to the block.

The Democrats have lost some of this block because they lost their fighting spirit, their spine. Liberals need to get tough to win them back, we need to stop pushing the rainbow coalition bullshit, forget about gun control and gay marriage, and focus on the real issues.

To all you Social Security bahsers, I have only one thing to say : Once the inflation hits, you will be in an even smaller minority. Our Socialist integrated Capitalist / Regulated Free Market economy has done amazing things for this country, and will continue to do so.

Because a lot of those "working poor" you are talking about have a WORK ETHIC! They don't want to take something they did not work for. The ones that believe they are victims, who demand all those wonderful gifts from the nanny state and have little to offer except the single hand, held palm up in the gimme-gimme salute are the ones that elect the liberals and the socialists.

Either that, or they're French.

Because democrats and republicans are all the same they pander to whatever group will listen and then when they get elected they back peddle on what they said. Whoever has the highest dollar gets the politicians ear thats just how it goes no matter what party you vote for and thats why a lot of people dont vote not because they are lazy its because they are tired of picking the lesser of the two evils.

Because the working "poor" does not exist as a real percentage in the US. Middle class is not poor, higher taxes affect them too and they are the majority of the US and they don't want to pay for "poor" people.

Visit another country and learn about what poor really means.

Leftists are mostly minority groups. Minorities do not traditionally, get out and vote.

You're biased question fails to take into account the poor quality of left wing candidates and their platforms.

Because right-wing parties still hold the media, and can persuade you that the left is dangerous.

If the republicans are so big on cutting taxes, how do they plan on paying for the war, roads, schools etc?
